State education, according to Dr. John Bridge, addressing Presbyterian clerg3'men and laymen at St. Paul, is becoming more and more secular and is to be distrusted, says the Spokesman-Review. Tbe clergy man evidently takes exception to non religious education in the public schools, and deplores the fact that religion is omitted from the curricu lum. His address was before dele gates representinsr the Presbyterians of the United States and found a responsive chord iu the breasts of a number of those present, for his remarks were applauded. One cannot believe that Presby terians generally approve the position taken by this man whose life work - is to educate children along religious lines, and therefore is biased in his opinions. For j-ears school boards have been making endeavors to eliminate denominational teaching from the public schools. And to ac complish this end it has been neces sary to prohibit the reading of verses from the bible and eliminate prayers. The wisdom of this couise is self apparent. The Methodist teacher unconsciously might attempt to in fluence the children of a Jew or a Catholic. The Catholic or Jew teacher might interpret certain pas sages along lines taught to them, and the practice would be exceedingly offensive to the parents of children who are being reared in Protestant faiths. Even congress has demanded that the Indian schools be removed from the. influence of religious sects, the last session witnessing heated debates on this very subject. t Too many people confound de nominational religion with morality. Morality is taught in the public schools of the United States, by precept and example. The child is shown the evils of tobacco, of strong drink, of profanity, of uncleanliness in mind and body, every effort being to induce physical and mental per fection. It ha3 wisely been ordered that the teaching of denominational religion be left to the parents in their homes and clergymen in their churches and private schools. Col leges for teaching denominational religion abound and are liberally en dowed by adherents in . every state and territorj'. Under this system both public and private schools flourish and one does not interfere with another. To adopt the ideas of Dr. Bridge would throw the state schools into turmoil. Every one of a score or more of religious sects would demand that its interpretation of Christianity be adopted in the public schools of its locality, and local school boards could be so influenced that religious differences would be more common in the schools ; than ; in churches. Public schools are admirably equip ped under present conditions for t all education which should be universal. Presbyterianism, Catholicism, Meth odism and other faiths will con- tinue to be taught, outside public school grounds. . Red Hot From the Can Was the ball that hit G. B.
